Additional Guidance for Modern Foreign Languages

When teaching modern foreign languages, educators need to be especially mindful of the diverse needs of their pupils. The inclusive approach to teaching requires adjustments to ensure that all students, irrespective of their challenges, receive an effective learning experience. Here’s a guide to assist teachers in implementing these adjustments:

  1. Supporting Learning:
  • Pupils with difficulty in oral expression might benefit from additional support in understanding, reading, and writing the language. Leveraging technology, especially ICT, can be of great assistance.
  • Pupils who face challenges in verbal communication might need alternate modes of communication. This can include the use of signing or symbols to aid in developing language proficiency and understanding.
  • For students with hearing challenges, specialized assistance might be required to help them discern the distinct sounds of a particular foreign language.
  • In situations where visual cues or gestures play a crucial role in developing conversational skills, support should be provided to pupils with visual impairments.
  1. Assessment Considerations:
  • Some pupils might face challenges with oral communication. If so, they might not be able to fulfill the requirements of the attainment target associated with speaking.
  • Similarly, pupils with hearing impairments might find it challenging to meet the attainment target linked to listening and responding.
  • When making judgments against level descriptions, it’s crucial to consider these factors. If certain aspects of the work cannot be completed due to the pupils’ challenges, the assessment of their progress should discount these components.

The key is to approach teaching with empathy, understanding, and flexibility, ensuring that all students are given the tools and support they need to thrive in learning a new language.
