Welcome to the National Curriculum Online

Implemented in the U.K. subsequent to the 1988 Education Reform Act, the National Curriculum establishes a unified set of subjects for children in primary and secondary schools, ensuring consistent learning objectives. Nevertheless, it is not mandatory for private schools and academies within the country. However, it is often used by top online schools in the UK.

The Primary Curriculum

Key Stages 1 and 2

The Secondary Curriculum

Key Stages 3 and 4

Divided into four crucial stages, each stage concludes with an evaluation of the student by their teacher, who then formulates a written report on the child’s academic progression. This report is subsequently shared and discussed with the child’s parent or guardian.

Recent modifications to the curriculum primarily affect primary school students. Specifically, as of 2016, standardised tests have been instituted for students in years 2 and 6 under the newly revised national primary curriculum.

Compulsory subjects under the National Curriculum include English, Maths, Science, Design and Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education, Computing, and Modern Foreign Languages. Starting from Key Stage 3, schools are also obliged to offer Religious Education and Sex Education. However, participation in these classes is not mandatory, and parents possess the right to withdraw their children from these lessons if they so choose. During Key Stage 4, the focus shifts towards preparing students for their GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education), which have superseded the obsolete GCE-O Level exams. The structure and content of the National Curriculum are legally regulated.

The curriculum is underpinned by two central objectives. Firstly, it aspires to furnish all students with the opportunity to learn and succeed. Secondly, it is dedicated to fostering students’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural growth, thereby equipping them for the myriad opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences life offers.
