In this section of the website, you will find practical ideas, activities, information and advice to help you teach swimming safely and well.

Tasks and Activities

To find core tasks, ideas and activities that you can use with all your pupils, click on the description below that best matches their level of learning.

Non-Swimmers
  • The pupils may work with buoyancy aids or adult support.
  • They are more often vertical than horizontal when moving through water.
Beginners
  • The pupils are more often horizontal than vertical when moving through water.
  • They rarely work with buoyancy aids or adult support.
Improvers
  • The pupils swim without buoyancy aids or adult support, using basic strokes on their back and front for at least 25 metres.
  • They are comfortable and confident in and around water.
Intermediates
  • The pupils are able to swim confidently for more than 50 metres.
  • They use recognised strokes with good body position and timing.
